Thor and the Moon
This is made- up Norse mythology story I wrote for my science class a few months ago. Feedback is much appreciated!
One day Thor the thunder god decided to to attack the two jotun wolves who were running after the sun and moon as punishment for their race breaking out of their ice bound realm. He was very pleased coming up with such a good idea that he boasted about it at one of the feasts. His guests thought is was great, but when the rumor traveled to Loki, the god of the jotuns, he was frightened. Loki pleaded Thor not to attack his race, but Thor did not listen and ordered Loki to get out of his sight.
Loki, seeing that pleading was hopeless, ran up and warned the two jotuns. The jotuns only half believed Loki because no one had tried to stop their never ending chase before. So, Loki’s final attempt to stop Thor was to switch Thor’s magic hammer with a regular one. Loki then went underground to the very grumpy gnomes.
“My friends, Thor is wishing to see one of your marvelous hammers because he has never set eyes on one and he does not believe that you use those kind of hammers to make such beautiful work”Loki explained to them.
Hesitantly, a gnome made a hammer for Loki to show Thor. Pleased that he had tricked the underground creatures once again, he waited until nightfall. When the moon was shinning bright, Loki tiptoed to Asgard, where Thor lived, and switched the magic hammer with a regular one. Then Loki ran as fast as he could to hide, trying not to laugh at himself for thinking up such a clever deed. The next morning, as Thor was getting ready to attack, he realized his magic hammer was gone. Furious about his misfortune, he blamed Loki since he was the one that would do such a horrid action. He told Odin, Loki’s brother about what happened. Odin pitied Thor and went to go look for Loki, but when he didn’t find him he swore that Loki would be punished.
Thor was satisfied, but still very unhappy because he had to use a lowly, regular hammer to attack the wolf jotuns. He decided to try to use it anyway, and he came crashing down to where the moon and sun were. The horses that were pulling the sun and moon saw him and ran faster than ever. At first the jpotuns didn’t see Thor but they did notice that the horses had picked up their pace. Suddenly, a hammer hit the jotun that was chasing the sun in the back, but the jotun wolf kept going even though his back throbbed.
Thor was delighted that he could bring down a regular hammer the same as a magic hammer. Still unused to the regular hammer, he was angry that he actually had to go get the hammer when it was thrown. He missed the wolf that was chasing the moon, and hit the moon instead and chipped off a piece making a crater in the moon. One of the light elves saw the piece get chipped off and tried to grab it, but was to slow and the wolf ate it. Thor kept on hitting the moon, making craters and the pieces flew everywhere. All the light elves tried to save the pieces but both wolves ate them. Thor finally gave up, too tired from having to throw the hammer hard and having to go and get it back, so he went back to Asgard to rest.
Sometimes, the jotun wolves would cough up some of the moons pieces and the light elves would fly to go catch them, but are too slow and they come raining by Earth, which humans watched in awe. Very rarly, one would fall down right to earth’s ground. To humans looking up, the pieces looked like shooting stars because of the streak that came from the light elves.
As for Loki, when Odin ordered him to give Thor back his hammer, he did as he was told and was punished to three weeks underground. Thor approved this punishment and was grateful to have his beloved hammer back. He also, of course, gave the regular hammer back to the gnomes.
