I was riding shotgun with my hair undone
In the front seat of her car
She one hand on the steering wheel,
The other on my soul.

I look around, roll the window down,
She says, “Is there something wrong?”
I say, “Nothing. I was just thinking about how we got along.”
And she says,

“Our day was a slamming car door,
Getting up early tapping on your head.
When you’re on your iPod typing real slow,
‘Cause you’re late and the car won’t go.”

“Our day was the day you laughed,
The first day man, I didn’t tease her and I should have.
And when I got home, ‘fore I said, “It’s ten,”
Asking God if I could go to bed.”

I was walking up the front school steps
Before everything that day.
I had guessed all wrong, had been laughed upon,
All lost, and ran away.

Survived to the holiday, well on my way
To my sinking bed.
I almost didn’t notice all the homework
And a note that said,

“Our day was a slamming car door,
Getting up early, tapping on your head,
When you’re on your iPod tapping real slow,
‘Cause you’re late and the car won’t go.”

I heard every story,
Listened to the radio,
Waited for something that was better than, or as bad as
Our day.

I grabbed a pen and an old notebook,
And I scribbled out our day….
